Curriculum Development Training Workshop: 'The Floating Garden People'
For information please contact:
Henk Frencken, ICLON, graduate school of teaching, Leiden University, the Netherlands.
Frencken@iclon.leidenuniv.nl and henkfrencken@gmail.com
DESCRIPTION
For teachers it is sometimes not easy to understand how to put the principles of school based curriculum development into practice.
This workshop aims to explore the concept of school based curriculum development in a practical and pleasant way.
The start of the workshop aims to take teachers out of their normal school environment and its daily concerns.
To achieve this aim, participants are introduced to the fairy tale culture of the Floating Garden People.
With some drama the culture is presented, using five pages that each describe the different aspects of the culture: social life, economy, health care, religion and history.
Next to this description, each group of participants is given a small basket containing a number of material ‘artifacts’ from the Floating Garden Culture.
The first assignment for the groups is to ‘give meaning’ to the artifacts from the Floating Garden Culture.
And in a plenary session the groups share their interpretations of the Floating Garden Culture.
As a next step each group designs their own school based curriculum for the Floating Garden People. The designs are written down on big poster papers.
Finally all curricula are presented and discussed in a plenary session. During this session all essential elements of curriculum design a covered.
